Trutnov lies in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. The Úpa River runs through the town. It is a district town in the Hradec Králové Region.

The first written record of Trutnov dates to 1260. Trutnov’s late Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built between 1756 and 1782, and its tower is 63 metres high. A battle in the Austro-Prussian War took place near the town on 27 June 1866, and an obelisk commemorating it was unveiled in 1868. The square features the Krakonoš Fountain, with a statue of Krakonoš dating from 1892, while the Uffo cultural centre offers theatre performances, concerts and the Vesmír cinema.
