Trutnov lies in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. The River Úpa flows through the town. It is a district administrative centre in the Hradec Králové Region.
The first written mention dates from 1260. The late Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built between 1756 and 1782 and has a 63-metre tower. The battle fought near Trutnov during the Austro-Prussian War on 27 June 1866 is commemorated by an obelisk unveiled in 1868.
