In North Macedonia, International Women's Day on 8 March is also celebrated as Mother's Day. Flowers are sold at stalls on street corners that day. Name days follow the calendar of the Macedonian Orthodox Church. People with flower names, such as Cveta, Ruža, Karanfil and Violeta, celebrate their name days on the Sunday before Orthodox Easter.
The most widely celebrated name day is that of Saint Nicholas on 19 December.
On 1 March, people give each other a red and white cord and take it off when they first see a flowering tree, a swallow or a stork.
