Studénka lies on the Odra River in the Poodří Protected Landscape Area, about 20 km southwest of Ostrava. It is also an important railway junction on the Přerov–Bohumín line.

The town was formed in 1959 by the merger of Studénka and Butovice, and Nová Horka joined in 1975. Its first written record dates to 1436. The Baroque chateau was completed in 1750, and the Railway Carriage Museum, which opened in 1961, is housed there and traces the history of the local carriage works and railway. The restored Nová Horka Chateau, a branch of the Nový Jičín Region Museum, is open to the public.
