Nejdek lies in the Ore Mountains, in the valley of the Rolava River. The town is 15 km north-west of Karlovy Vary. It stands 568 metres above sea level.

The first written record of Nejdek dates from 1340. The town's history is linked to mining and metalworking. The ruins of a Romanesque-Gothic castle tower remain. The Church of St Martin is recorded in 1354.
