Nejdek lies in the Ore Mountains, in the valley of the River Rolava. It is 15 km north-west of Karlovy Vary. The town stands 568 m above sea level.
The first written record of the town dates from 1340. Its history is linked to metal mining and processing. The surviving monuments include the ruins of the castle's Romanesque-Gothic tower and St Martin's Church, mentioned in 1354.
