Benešov lies in the Benešovská pahorkatina uplands, about 30 km south-east of Prague.
The first written record of Benešov dates from 1219. St Nicholas's Church on Karlov Hill, with its separate masonry bell tower, dates from the 13th century. Konopiště Castle near Benešov was founded around 1294 and bought by František Ferdinand d'Este in 1887.
