Benešov lies about 30 km south-east of Prague. The local museum of art and design was founded in 1990. The town also has the Na Poště municipal theatre and the Karlov cultural centre.
The first written record of Benešov dates from 1219. St Nicholas' Church on Karlov hill dates from the 13th century and has a freestanding masonry bell tower. Nearby Konopiště Castle was founded around 1294.
