Železný Brod lies about 11 km south-east of Jablonec nad Nisou. The town became an important centre of the glassmaking industry and glass art. The local glassmaking school was founded in 1920.

The first written mention of the town dates from 1352. The deanery church of St James the Greater is a Baroque building from the 18th century. Beside the church stands a wooden Baroque bell tower dating from 1761.
