Žamberk lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains. The town sits in the valley of the Divoká Orlice River. It is 418 metres above sea level.

The earliest recorded mention of Žamberk appears in a charter dating from 1332. Its historic centre has been an urban conservation area since 1995. In 1575, Mikuláš z Bubna joined the two halves of Žamberk and decided to build a castle.
