Vlašim lies on the River Blanice, 20 km south-east of Benešov and 40 km north of Tábor. The town stands 365 m above sea level. In 1935, Sellier & Bellot, a manufacturer of sporting and hunting ammunition, established itself here.

The first written mention of the local castle dates from 1303, and that of the small town below the fortified manor from 1320. Vlašim château houses the Podblanicka Museum. The Auersperg family established the château park along the Blanice in 1775 in the English style.
