Vítkov lies in the Vítkovská vrchovina at the foot of the Nízký Jeseník range. The stream Čermná flows through the town.

Vítek z Kravař probably founded Vítkov together with Vikštejn Castle in the second half of the 13th century. The first written mention of Vítkov dates from 1301. A statue of St Mark, erected in 1861, stands in the town in memory of the great plague.
