Ústí nad Orlicí lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains. The town stands at the confluence of the Tichá Orlice and Třebovka rivers. It is approximately 10 km north-north-west of Česká Třebová.

The first reliable written record of the town dates from 1292. Its historic buildings include the baroque town hall dating from 1721–1723 and the baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dating from 1770–1776. The Art Nouveau Hernych villa, built in 1906–1907, has housed the municipal museum since 2008.
