Třebíč lies on both banks of the Jihlava river. It is about 30 km south-east of Jihlava. It is also 56 km west of Brno.

The Benedictine monastery was founded here in 1101, and Třebíč received its town charter in 1335. The Basilica of St Procopius, the Jewish quarter and the Jewish cemetery have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2003. A wooden observation tower, 26.5 metres tall, stands south of the town.
