Tachov lies on the Mže River in the Tachov Furrow. It is 54 kilometres west of Pilsen. Tachov lies 20 kilometres south of Mariánské Lázně.
The first reliable written mention of Tachov dates from 1126. The royal town of Tachov was probably founded around 1275. Town walls about 700 metres long surround the historic centre. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands in Tachov and was originally built in the Early Gothic style.
