Světlá nad Sázavou is 14 km north-west of Havlíčkův Brod. It lies at the confluence of the Sázava and Sázavka rivers.

The first written mention of Světlá nad Sázavou dates to 1207 and concerns a village belonging to Vilémov Monastery. Světlá nad Sázavou Castle stands on Zámecká Street on the left bank of the Sázava. It is surrounded by an 18-hectare English-style park with a cascade of ponds.
