Sušice lies on the River Otava, around 25 kilometres south-east of Klatovy. The earliest written record of the town dates from 1233. The town hall on Svobody square has a 31-metre tower.

The Šumava Museum on Svobody square displays one of the largest mechanical nativity scenes in Czechia. The cemetery Church of the Virgin Mary is part of an unfinished Gothic building from the 14th century. Svatobor (845 m) rises above the town, with a stone observation tower dating from 1934 and a mountain lodge.
