Rýmařov lies in the Nízký Jeseník range, approximately 15 km south-west of Bruntál. It has around 7,700 residents. The local textile mill Hedva Český brokát produces brocades and fabrics for ties and tablecloths.

Rýmařov was first mentioned in writing in 1351 and is documented as a town from 1406. Following the fire of 1790, it was rebuilt in neoclassical and Empire styles, and its historic centre has been a heritage conservation area since 2003. Janovice Castle, in the district of the same name, developed from a late Gothic fortress dating from 1520–1530.
