Rousínov lies twelve kilometres south-west of Vyškov. The Rakovec stream flows through the town. The first written mention of the town dates from 1222.

The town was originally called Nový Rousínov. The oldest map of Moravia, dating from 1569, depicts it as a walled market town. Local historic buildings include the Church of St Mary Magdalene, built between 1696 and 1717.
