Přerov lies on the River Bečva in the Upper Morava Valley. It is 21 km south-east of Olomouc. The historic centre extends around Horní náměstí.

The first written reference to Přerov as a town dates from 1141. Jan Amos Komenský completed his studies at the Brethren school here and taught for four years. The Renaissance chateau from the first quarter of the 17th century houses the Comenius Museum, founded in 1888. Předmostí is home to a world-renowned Gravettian settlement of mammoth hunters.
