Polná lies on the Šlapanka River. It is 14 km north-east of Jihlava. The town stands at an altitude of around 490 m.
The first written record of Polná dates from 1242. Its historic centre is an urban conservation area. The Polná Municipal Museum is based in the castle and chateau complex and offers tour circuits covering the castle, museum and Old School. A cinema operates in the chateau building.
