Podbořany lies on the southern edge of the Most Basin. It stands at the confluence of the Dolánecký and Kyselý streams. It is 14 km south-west of Žatec.
The first written mention of Podbořany dates to 1362. The Pseudo-Romanesque Church of the Divine Saviour was built in 1901–1902. The Baroque Church of St Peter and St Paul dates from 1781.
