Planá lies 11 km north-east of Tachov and the same distance south of Mariánské Lázně. In 2025, it had approximately 5,500 residents.

The first written record of Planá dates to 1251, when King Wenceslas I granted patronage over the local church. The parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has a 13th-century Romanesque core and was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The Church of St Peter and St Paul, about half a kilometre east of the square, is the town's oldest surviving monument and is now used for cultural purposes.
