Odry lies on the River Odra in the Nový Jičín district. The town is 274 metres above sea level.
The first written record, dating from 1234, gives the name Vyhnanov, while Odry is mentioned as a town in 1362. The historic centre is an urban heritage conservation zone. St Bartholomew's Church dates from 1373 and underwent a Baroque reconstruction in 1691–1692.
