Mladá Boleslav lies on the left bank of the middle reaches of the Jizera. It is about 50 km north-east of Prague.

In 1334, Ješek z Michalovic had the town relocated beside the castle. The castle served as barracks and a prison, and has housed the Museum of the Mladá Boleslav Region since 1970. The Renaissance town hall, dating from 1554–1559, extends from the west onto Old Town Square, which narrows towards the castle. The Škoda Museum occupies former factory halls where cars were made until 1928.
