Mimoň lies in the Ralská pahorkatina uplands, at the confluence of the Ploučnice and Panenský potok. The town is about 15 km east of Česká Lípa.
The first written record of Mimoň dates from 1262. In 1505, the former parish village was raised to town status. The Mimoň Town Museum is housed in a former hospital building dating from 1679, and Ralsko Culture House on ČSA Square serves as a cultural centre. Mimoň's Social Services organisation was formed by merging the retirement home in Mimoň and the home-care service.
