Mikulov lies on the southern edge of the Pavlov Hills. The town is 18 km west of Břeclav, near the Austrian border. In 2025, Mikulov had about 7,600 residents.
The first written mention of Mikulov appears in a gift charter issued by King Přemysl Otakar II on 14 January 1249. Mikulov's historic centre is a town conservation area. Its landmarks include the chateau, the Dietrichstein tomb, the Baroque synagogue and Holy Hill with the Stations of the Cross.
