Louny stands on the River Ohře. It is approximately 50 kilometres from Prague. The earliest mentions of the settlement of Luna beside a ford across the Ohře date from the 12th century.

Přemysl Otakar II founded the royal town in the 1260s. Following the town fire of 1517, St Nicholas's Church with its three-part tent roof was built, with construction completed in 1538. The town walls surround two thirds of the historic centre.
