Litomyšl lies on the Loučná River. It is in the central part of the Svitavská pahorkatina. It is 17 km north-west of Svitavy.
The first mention of Litomyšl dates to 981 in Cosmas's Chronicle. The Litomyšl Chateau complex has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999.
