Litoměřice lies in northern Bohemia at the confluence of the Elbe and Ohře. The town stands on the western edge of the Elbe Lowland. Its elevation is 136 m above sea level.

Litoměřice became a royal town between 1219 and 1228. It has been the seat of a bishopric since 1655. The baroque cathedral of St Stephen was built between 1664 and 1668. The town hall was built in the Saxon Renaissance style.
