Lanškroun lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains, in the broad valley of the Moravská Sázava, near the historic border with Moravia. The first surviving written mention of the town dates to 1285, and its historic centre is a municipal conservation area. At the centre of the square stands a Renaissance town hall built in 1581–1582. The castle houses the town museum, with a permanent exhibition on the town's history.
