Kyjov lies in the valley of the River Kyjovka in the Hodonín district. The town is about 43 km from Brno. In 2025, it had 10,645 residents.

The first written record dates from 1126, when Kyjov was donated to the Benedictines as a market village. The Renaissance town hall, built in 1561–1562, was designated a national cultural monument in 2023. The historic centre is an urban conservation area.
