Kuřim lies in the upland area known as Bobravská vrchovina. The town is 14 km north-west of Brno, on the edge of Baba Nature Park.
The first written mention of Kuřim dates from 1226, in a document issued when the Church of St Mary Magdalene was founded. The Renaissance château in Kuřim stands on the site of a 14th-century fortress and houses a private secondary technical school and vocational school.
