Kdyně lies where the Švihovská and Všerubská uplands meet, in the Domažlice District. Written sources first mention the town in 1369.

The museum is housed in a reconstructed building of the former spinning mills. It focuses on the region’s history and the textile industry. The parish church of St Nicholas stands in Kdyně. Near the rectory stands Zámeček, which has been known by that name since 1796.
