Kaplice lies on the Malše River, 20 km south-east of Český Krumlov. The town stands on the north-western edge of the Novohradské Mountains.
Kaplice was first mentioned in writing in 1257. It received town rights in 1382. Since 1990, its historic centre has been an urban conservation area. It includes the deanery church of St Peter and St Paul.
