Humpolec lies 23 km north-west of Jihlava. It is roughly halfway between Prague and Brno on the D1 motorway.
The first reliable written record of the town dates from 1233. In the 19th century, its established cloth-making industry earned it the name 'Bohemian Manchester'. About two kilometres from the centre stand the ruins of Orlík Castle, which have also served as a lookout tower since 2014.
