Hlinsko lies in the valley of the upper course of the Chrudimka. The town stands 582 metres above sea level. It is about 32 kilometres from Pardubice and 22 kilometres from Chrudim.
The first written record of Hlinsko dates from 1349. The town later developed into an industrial centre for the manufacture of electrical appliances. Since 1995, Hlinecký Betlém has been a conservation area for folk architecture.
