Cheb lies on the River Ohře. The town is forty kilometres south-west of Karlovy Vary. It is five kilometres from the border with Germany.

The first surviving mention of the town dates from 1061. The historic centre is a conservation area. On the square stands Špalíček, a group of eleven medieval merchants' houses.
