Český Brod lies on the small river Šembera. The town is about 27 km west of Kolín.

The town was probably founded by Jan I, Bishop of Prague, and was already a market town in 1289. The main surviving parts of the 14th-century fortifications are the Kouřimská brána gate and a short stretch of wall. The Podlipanské muzeum has a permanent exhibition about the Battle of Lipany.
