Bystřice nad Pernštejnem lies on the Bystřice stream. It is 24 km east of Žďár nad Sázavou.
The first written record of Bystřice nad Pernštejnem dates to 1220. The town's development was linked to the discovery and mining of uranium ore at the nearby Rožná deposit. The square is home to the 13th-century Church of St Lawrence and a Marian column dating from 1727.
