Bohumín lies where the Odra and Olše rivers meet, near the Polish border. Ostrava is nine kilometres to the north-east. In 2025, Bohumín had approximately 20,300 residents.

The first written mention of the village of Bogun, from which present-day Bohumín developed, dates to 1256.
